Figs from Trebinje
Recognizing the need for a safe place and a social business cooperative in Trebinje where women victims of domestic violence could earn a living, Ljiljana Čičković from the Women’s Center from Trebinje presented an idea on this topic. The city of Trebinje provided the land for planting: the initial 5 hectares were expanded by an additional two hectares, which were then carefully prepared for the cultivation of vegetable crops. Symbolically, the center chose to plant figs as its hallmark – a plant known for its resilience and strength, two qualities victims of domestic violence actually care about.
They worked hard and significantly improved the quality of the soil, installed a drip irrigation system, fenced the plot and installed a security system. In addition to 20 fig trees, there is also a large greenhouse on the land and so far 5,000 grapevines.
With the support of the program Empowering women’s organizations and the movement to fight against violence against women (Issues Affecting Women) funded by the KCA and the Trag Foundation, they have grown financially and emotionally together with the plants they care for.
