Active Communities

For over 20 years, Trag Foundation has been running the Active Communities program, through which 698 initiatives by informal groups and associations in more than 200 communities across Serbia have been supported to date.

Supporting the Realization of Ideas

From the very beginning, the program has followed the needs of engaged citizens, providing both financial and other forms of support to help them bring their ideas to life — ideas that contribute to the development and well-being of their communities.

We believe that engaged citizens are best at recognizing the needs of their own communities.

The Active Communities program creates space for diverse projects that contribute to community development. For us, a community is made up of citizens united around shared values, needs, interests, and issues, who, by developing a sense of belonging, take collective action.

Trag Foundation believes that a community is not merely a group of individuals but is primarily defined by the interactions individuals engage in to achieve shared goals, grounded in the values of solidarity, respect for diversity, equality, and responsibility.

Community Support

We believe in the potential and power of active and engaged citizens to influence change in their communities, whether they are connected by a physical space (geographic territory), an online space, or a shared interest or need. Therefore, communities can be local, ethnic minority communities, groups of individuals from various marginalized backgrounds, LGBT+ communities, online communities, and more.

During the selection process, project proposals for the Active Communities program are considered at the following levels:

Project Preparation

The Trag Foundation team collects, reviews, and prepares projects, which are then forwarded for further evaluation.

Activist Board

Board of activists, a nine-member team consisting of activists from local communities who previously participated in the Active Communities program

Active Communities

The Donation Board consists of representatives from various sectors with experience working in or collaborating with civil society organizations, as well as experts in different fields such as culture, urban planning, environmental protection, civic activism, and organizational development.
